Jazz in Palermo ... "Open Jazz School" The Return


Open School Jazz

School Music Together, directed by Mimmo Cafiero and Loredana Spata (now called Open Jazz School) was founded in 1991 in Palermo, Sicily by the Music Together.

Currently the school has the largest number of years of continuous activity among all the other jazz schools operating in Sicily and was attended by over 1500 students, many of whom have now established musicians in the jazz scene regionally and nationally.

In recent years the school has about 100 seminars organized with the participation of some of the best teachers in international jazz including Ettore Fioravanti, Maurizio Caldura, Umberto Fiorentino, Cinzia Spata, Fabio Mariani, Giampaolo Casati, Ramberto Ciammarughi, Paolino Dalla Porta, Dario Deidda, Dusko Gojcovich, Marco Tamburini, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Roberto Rossi, Joan Cartwright, Paolo Damiani, Marc Abrams, Eddie Henderson, Roberto Gatto, Laura Fedele, Emanuele Cisi, Antonio FaraĆ², Enrico Rava, Maria Pia De Vito, Hal Crook, Mick Goodrick, Gigi Cifarelli, Bruno Destreza, Christian Meyer, Riccardo Luppi, Emanuele Cisi, Erwin Vann, Paul Jeffrey, Peter Condorelli, Paolo Fresu, Stefano Battaglia, Barbara Casini, Enzo Carpentieri, Rita Marcotulli, Mark Murphy, Michael Aspinal, Sheila Jordan, Norma Winstone, Marcello Tonolo, Bruno Persico, Mario Raja, Giulio Martino, Riccardo Zegna, Lee Konitz, Gene Calderazzo, Garrison Fewell, Harvie S and Mirko Guerrini.

The School also participated in cultural exchanges with other institutions outside the region of Sicily that involved some students.

1999 - North Carolina Duke University
In April of '99 we were invited by the Duke University Department of Music. Students who participated were the guitarists Guiana Francesco and Riccardo Bertolino and bassist Fulvio Buccafusca.
2000 - OTTO JAZZ CLUB Naples
Our school went to visit one of the most historic jazz clubs in Italy. They played in February 2000 to the excellent Jazz Club in Naples students singer Giorgia Meli, Olivia and Sara Giuliano Sellerio and students Romina Money instrumentalists on bass, Iano Anzelmo and Massimo D'Aleo on drums, Rita Collura and Salvatore De Vecchi to saxophones, Lino Costa guitar and Ivan secret plan.
2001 - OPEN JAZZ ORCHESTRA on tour
Some of our students as an established member of the Open Jazz Orchestra directed by Mimmo Cafiero to attend a summer tour that saw the orchestra perform in various concerts throughout Italy. The students involved were Joseph Graziano on drums, Rosario Di Rosa on piano, Paul Mignone on drums and Carlo Gangitano, Fabrizio De Vecchi and Salvatore Scaturro on saxophones, keyboards and Rich Marcello Bruno Bertolino on guitar.
2002 - Duke University North Carolina
During the months of March and October of 2002 we were invited 2 more times by the Duke University Department of Music. Participants in March were Salvatore De Vecchi on sax, Dino Bertolino Cangemi on bass and Richard on guitar. In October it was Fabrizio Cassara's turn on sax and guitar Lucio Tusa.
2003 - Naples Festival of Jazz Schools
We attended the first School of Jazz festival held in Naples from Bruno Persico, director of CFM. They have participated as representatives of our school saxophonist Fabrizio Cassara, pianist Guido Curto, bassist and drummer Paul Cangemi Bino Mignone.
2003 - University of Cosenza
Concerto in collaboration with the University of Cosenza in which our students Fabrizio Cassara, Bino Cangemi and Paul Mignone Paul played with Jeffrey at the Aula Magna of the Faculty of Arts.
2004 - BERN Langnau Jazz Nights
In July Mimmo Cafiero was the 2004 ITALIAN OPEN YOUTH BAND, which includes training young musicians under 21 from various Italian schools. The band has performed in the fourteenth edition of this international festival Jazz Nights at Langnau in Switzerland. School of Music Together they were part of the singer and drummer Laura Campisi Tullio Viola.
2005 - BERN Langnau Jazz Nights
In July 2005, Mimmo Cafiero was again invited to Switzerland to participate with the ITALIAN OPEN YOUTH BAND at the international festival of Langnau. School of Music Together was on the board this time the singer Alice Sparti. Diego Tarantino bassist and drummer Anthony Anastasi.
2008 - Langnau BERN JAZZ NIGHTS
In July 2008, still in Switzerland to participate this time with the SICILIAN OPEN YOUTH BAND at the international festival of Langnau. School of Music Together they were part of the saxophonist Carla Restivo, bassist Federcasse Gueci, trombonist Danilo Montalbano, guitarist Sergio Schifano, pianist John Conte and drummer Anthony Anastasi.
From 2001 to 2008 has organized seven editions of the festival "SCHOOLS OF JAZZ IN CONCERT" inside of which were hosted by students and teachers from various parts of the world.

Among the schools involved in the school of Thelonious Monk FRAUD, CFM Music Training Centre of Naples, the school JAZZ ON Avezzano, the Langnau BERN MUSIC SCHOOL, the CESM of Catania, the Municipal School of Bath (SR), the Center Project Sound of Messina, NORTH CAROLINA DUKE UNIVERSITY MUSIC TIME and the school of Milan.
